The Hash Brothers — Southwest Virginia's Earliest Settlers
By Dutton Family

The Hash family's roots in Southwest Virginia run deeper than almost any other. Three Hash brothers — John, William, and James — arrived in the region around 1763 and received land grants on the New River and Bridle Creek in 1773.
Old John Hash (1724–1784) settled 250 acres at the mouth of Bridle Creek. Approximately 99% of all Hashes in America descend from John and William Hash.
Lelia Hash Dutton — Eugene "Pap" Dutton's mother — carried this heritage into the Dutton line, connecting the family to one of the oldest documented settler lineages in the Appalachian region.
